THE PLASTICENE ERA

Are we really living in the Plasticene, the age of plastic? We will find out with two guides: marine microbiologists Linda Amaral and Erik Zettler, who discovered the plastisphere, a neologism describing the microcosm of living organisms that colonise plastic substrates in contact with the oceans. Like a journey carried by an ocean current, we will follow the evolution of this manufactured material, from revolutionary technological innovation to threat for marine ecosystems. We will observe the fragmentation processes that generate microplastics : tiny fragments that accumulate into vast “plastic islands”. Bioaccumulo and biomagnification will be the key concepts guiding us as we explain how some substances transported by plastic can pose serious risks to our health as well. We will try to understand whether a sustainable future without plastic is truly possible.
