MICROPLASTICS AND HEAVY METALS

Pelagosphera has developed an intense and productive scientific collaboration with public universities, including theUniversity of Turin, Department of Life Sciences and Systems Biology (DBIOS)and with research institutes such as theIstituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale di Piemonte, Liguria e Valle d’Aosta – IZSPLV and CNR-ISMAR in Venice. These collaborations focus on the study of pollutant distribution within marine food webs, including:

– heavy metals (trace metals)
– Rare Earth Elements (REEs)
– non-metal inorganic contaminants
– microplastics

The cooperative carries out ad hoc sampling and provides the biotic and abiotic matrices on which analyses are conducted. Through its students and PhD candidates, Pelagosphera also contributes to laboratory work and sample preparation.

Many students carry out bachelor’s and master’s theses on environmental topics based on the research and studies conducted by Pelagosphera and its partners on microplastics and heavy metals.

Pelagosphera contributes to the writing and publication of numerous scientific papers in specialist journals, including Ecological Indicators, (Q1, IF 7), Environmental Pollution, (Q1, IF 7.6) Science of the Total Environment (Q1, 8.2) Marine Pollution (Q1, IF 5.3), and has taken part in dedicated conferences and workshops.

Pelagosphera is available to establish scientific collaborations and joint research projects with both public and private organisations seeking to investigate the occurrence, distribution and dispersal of contaminants in the marine environment.
