Team Professional backgroud

The exploration of the Mediterranean Sea bottoms, coupled with the natural passion for the sea, was determinant to create Pelagosphera with the aim to address our attention to science both research and education, and embrace a growing number of people, free citizens, children and young people who love the sea. The whole team is made by reserchers who obtained a Ph.D. in marine biology, focusing on biodiversity conservation and evolutionary biology.

Our experience covers different research topics as marine plancton ecology, animal community dynamics and the seagrass Posidonia oceanica. The numerous underwater field missions have been essentials to improve and strengthen our competencies. Thanks to a convention signed with the University of Turin it is possible to interchange knowleges with researchers of the Departments of Animal and Human biology and Vegetal Biology.

Our experience: compentency areas

Physical and biological oceanography

1. Sampling and analysis of the main chemical-physical and microbiological water parametres
2. Sampling strategies and analysis of planctonic and nectonic populations
3. Distribution, habitat use and ethology of marine mammals
4. Geomorphology and sedimentology of sea bottoms
5. Elaboration of biocenotic maps

Benthos

1. Phytobenthos: carthography of Posidonia oceanica and other marine seagrasses and analysis of the impact produced by artificial sea structures
2. Zoobenthos: sampling strategies and study of the main groups of molluscs, polychaetes and crustaceans

Conservation

1. Underwater monitoring for sea shores management
2. Monitoring of marine protected areas or proposed for preservation
3. Design of integrated packages of environmental management with multiple objectives
4. Scientific and technical evaluation of moorings implanting for boats connecting little Islands and crossing preserved natural areas

Knowledge transfer

1. Promote the protection, preservation and enhancement of local natural resources for environmental sustainability
2. Educational activities for divers and sport fishing associations but also for other different categories entities
3. Planning of educational training courses for schools of different grade by collaborating with environmental and marine organizations (e.g. Legambiente and the Italian Naval League)
4. Plannig of different activities including diving, snorkeling, museum and aquarium exhibitions
5. Creation of education materials in the field of the marine environment
6. Organization of seminars and conferences
7. Promote the Tuscan fishing
   
   

Environmental analysis

1. Application of different indices such as the Evaluation of Environmental Index (EEI), Strategic Environmental Evaluation (SEE) and Environmental state and prior assessment in site of community importance (SCI) and special protection area (SPA)
2. Analysis of environmental quality of lagoons and freshwaters (EBI extended biotic index, EPI-D eutrophication pollution index based on diatoms)
3. Consultancy on environmental certification (EMAS-ISO 14000) for marine and coastal companies and institutions
